I have to admit that at times I can do things that don’t make a whole lot of sense. For example, while vacuuming a house, I discovered that it didn’t matter if the vacuum was plugged in or not, as long as I pushed it back and forth across the carpet, it would still leave the same markings on the floor and give the impression that it had been cleaned. So, I went through the entire house without bothering with the hassle of electricity, then spent some time admiring my handiwork and creative ingenuity. It didn’t occur to me that I had spent the same amount of time and energy to accomplish nothing more than a good presentation. Regardless of its appearance to be clean to anyone who looked at it, underneath the surface, it was still dirty. A little electricity would have made all the difference.
Many people do the same thing spiritually. They realize that they need to clean their lives up and get right with God. But instead of plugging into the electricity of the Holy Spirit and allowing him to clean all the dirt and grime of sin out of their hearts, they decide to go through the motions instead. They know how to leave all the right markings on the floor by church attendance, wearing the right clothes, adopting the right jargon and speaking in Christianese, and refraining from certain taboo activities, but upon further inspection, the heart is still dirty. On the outside, the individual appears to be a devoted, godly person, but on the inside, they know and God knows that there is an insatiable appetite for sin. They may even admire themselves for the outward results produced by their hard work, but all they have accomplished is a good presentation. What’s the point of all that hard work if there is no reality of a life with God? Isn’t it much easier to plug into the outlet of Gods forgiveness through genuine repentance, receive the cleansing of the blood of Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, and truly be clean?
Remember that Jesus warned the religious crowd of his day that they made the outside of the cup clean, but inside, they were full of cursing and bitterness. He said they were like whitewashed tombs, but on the inside they were full of dead mens bones. Yikes!
Don’t make that fatal mistake. Jesus taught that we must be born again or we would not see the kingdom of God. John 3:3 All of us have been born physically by our parents. Being born of the Spirit comes from God. You can’t do it on your own.
The good news is, he is ready and willing to give you this new life in Christ if you will come to him in humility and faith. Stop giving false impressions. Abandon the trust you once had in your own good works. Put your trust in Jesus instead. You’ll find it’s a lot easier, and your heart will actually be truly clean. The Holy Spirit makes all the difference!
