Sowing Seeds

After some street witnessing Thursday night, we were talking on the way home and sharing stories of the encounters we had. One of the girls was telling us about a person she met who had all sorts of weird ideas about God and the Bible. She was wondering if their conversation did any good at all.

Have you ever been there? Have you spoken with someone who adamantly insists that the Bible says some crazy thing, (which you know it doesn’t) but they can’t remember where it says so? Or else people say things like, “I believe God is like this,” and go into describing some far out fairy tale?

I know it can be a bit unnerving to deal with these situations, and you can even walk away feeling a bit defeated if it appears they don’t receive the truth when you present it to them. But don’t be discouraged! Think about it. Every weird doctrine of false impression that person holds is something that someone taught them at some point in time, and they remembered it. That little seed that someone else sowed bore fruit. It shaped their view of God. Now YOU get to be the voice of reason who shows them, from the Scriptures, what is really true. You never know how far that seed of truth will go, or how much fruit it will eventually bear.

If I think back to before I was a Christian, I can remember believing all kinds of far out things about God. There were people at different occasions who took the time to correct those false impressions. I even remember being contentious with some of them, but the truth did stick with me. Not one of those people ever saw me come to Christ, but they all played a part in leading me to Him. Each of those people had a hand in planting the seeds which eventually bore the fruit of bringing me to the Lord.

So when you are sharing the gospel with your friends, neighbors and loved ones, aim for repentance. Aim to bring them to Christ. But if all that happens is you get to sow more seeds of truth into their lives, rejoice! Your work is not a waste! Pray for that person, and know that God’s word doesn’t return void. He loves them more than you do, and He is pursuing them and working on their heart all the time.

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

Something to Tune Into

In order to post this message, I’m wirelessly connecting to the Internet with my laptop. Pretty amazing, when you think about it. I can type my thoughts for the day and instantly share them with people literally all over the world in seconds. Alternatively, I can simply call or FaceTime a friend and have a real-time, face to face conversation, all because of the advances in technology.
Right now, there are millions of bits of information passing in front of you. Radio programs, conversations, television shows, etc., are being transmitted through frequencies that just need the right receiver to be tuned into. Any piece of news, scientific discovery, or information from world history is available to me at any moment if I just get on my mobile internet. Crazy!
Flash back just 200 years, and try telling the average person about these advancements. They will think you’re crazy! Try telling them that you can talk to another person, literally on the other side of the world, in real time, with a small 3″x5″ device in your hands. Your voice goes into a machine, which converts it into data that it then sends to a tower, which sends it to a satellite, which then sends it to another tower, which sends it to the other person’s phone, and it comes out sounding exactly the same. And it happens in less than a couple of seconds. All while there are millions of similar conversations happening simultaneously, and they don’t get mixed up! You will have a very difficult time convincing anyone that this is even possible.

This is what it feels like to explain a relationship with God to skeptics. People sometimes think I’m loony when I tell them about Jesus living inside of me and speaking to me in different ways. They think I’m either lying to myself or that I’m out of my mind!
“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” 1 Cor 2:14
But when people receive the Holy Spirit, they are able to “tune into” spiritual things and begin to understand and experience Him for themselves. The Bible comes alive in full living color!
The Bible tells us that spiritual things are “the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.” 1Cor 2:9-13

Do you have the Holy Spirit? Are you able to comprehend spiritual things?
I understand that for many people this is difficult to grasp. But there is a spiritual reality and a vibrant, fulfilling relationship with the God of the universe that is available to all who will come to Him through Jesus Christ.
Foolishness to some, but an everyday reality for many.

Hope for the Hopeless

imageImagine you live in a country where religious extremists are trying to overthrow the government through violence and civil unrest. Mass executions are carried out by both sides, and the entire framework of the country is deteriorating to the point where people are fleeing for their lives, leaving homes, families, jobs, and everything they have ever known. Imagine being so desperate that you get into an inflatable raft, with nothing but the clothes on your back, and push out to sea, hoping that whatever shore you land on will receive you.
An average of 6,000 of these people are arriving on the shores of Greece EVERY DAY, looking for freedom and hope of a better life. Men, women, children, grandparents, mothers, and fathers. All willing to risk their lives, leaving everything behind in desperation. Between Oct 16-21, 48,000 of these refugees crossed into Greece.
They’ve just watched everything they believe in come crashing down. Leaders of their country have betrayed them. Their financial security has failed them. Their religion has tried to kill them. Over 110,000 civilians have already been killed in Syria alone.
So what do they do? What you and I would probably do in their situation. They are escaping with their lives to look for a place to live. We’ve seen it on the news. We’ve heard about the situation, but it seems so far away, it really doesnt affect us. We change the channel, shut the computer, or whatever, and we are immediately removed from the problem and distracted by life. But the problem isnt goig away for the millions of people who are living in it and cannot escape. They can’t simply close their eyes and wish it away. Its day be day, minute by minute reality.
How will we respond? What will we do? What CAN we do?
Samaritan’s Purse has been on the ground, offering food, clothing, shelter, and basic necessities. YWAM Athens has been partnering and working alongside them to help distribute those provisions. But they need more help. They have more supplies than they have people to give them out. And there are such masses of people coming in, there aren’t enough workers to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with a hopeless people.
Our School of Missions and Evangelism from YWAM Honolulu is answering the call to GO and help. On the first weekend of December, we are flying to Athens to join the work of distributing rations and showing the love of Jesus Christ to these hurting people. This is probably the first time that many of these people will ever meet a Christian. We want to show them the love of Christ in one hand by meeting their most basic needs, and give them the message of Christ on the other hand so they can begin building their lives on the solid rock foundation of Jesus Christ. We want to see these people come into a real relationship with the Lord and be saved.
Please take 5 minutes to click the link and watch the video. This is exactly what we will be doing. Meeting people on the shores as they make landfall, helping them with warmth, food, clothing, medical care, etc. My heart breaks for these people. I’m sure yours does to. I am in a position where I can actually GO and do something about it. Through your prayers and financial support, we are going in your stead. Thanks for being behind us.

There should be some other videos at the Samaritan’s Purse website with more footage and interviews with the refugees. Feel free to look around and gain a heart of compassion.

Mission Update

Adjusting to life in Honolulu has been proving to be a bit of a process for our family. Now that we’ve been here for a month, we are pretty much settled into a routine, but are still brushing up on some finishing touches here and there.

The kids are doing well in school, which was a challenge at first. They were very intimidated (understandably so) by the new surroundings, students, and culture when we first arrived and enrolled them. There are very few white people in the schools, so they immediately felt like a minority. But, they have not been treated poorly by anyone, and I’m sure those feelings of inferiority will fade as they continue to make new friends.
They missed the entire first quarter of the school year, but their teachers have been very understanding of our situation and have basically excused them for the quarter and will grade their whole first semester based on their performance in this second quarter. So we are blessed to be working with those types of people here.
We still haven’t figured out how we are going to be dealing with meals on a regular basis. Part of our family’s fees for living on base include eating base food, but sometimes the meals contain foods that my kids are allergic to. Thankfully, we have a refrigerator and some cabinet space in our house, so we can make meals at home if need be. The only problem is, if I load up the fridge with food, my children may take too much liberty with rejecting the base meals in favor of something they prefer at home, and then food becomes a huge expense. So, it’s something we have to really be on top of.
Honolulu is a top world travel destination, for obvious reasons. The weather is great, the ocean is warm, and it has developed a reputation as a tropical paradise. This is all true, as long as you stay within the popular, touristy areas. As soon as you go off the beaten path, you are in for a surprise. A whole other world opens up within a couple of blocks of Waikiki. With a population of over a million people, everything in Honolulu is a very tight squeeze. Seriously, its like living in a foreign country, and in many places, a 3rd world country. The vast majority of residents are a combination of native Hawaiians and people from all over Asia. And many of them do not speak English at all. I still haven’t figured out the culture here, but I’m working on it.
We were really shocked at the homeless situation here. Honolulu has the highest number of homeless people in the US. We have been working with a food distribution ministry every week called Feeding the Hungry. 500-700 people show up every Thursday to get free food that comes from a local food bank. After the food has all been unpacked and organized, and we are ready to distribute, my responsibility during the event is to mingle around the people, making friends, praying, sharing the gospel. Most of the people do not speak any english, so I have to do a bit of fishing before I find someone I can talk to. We have a lot of fun serving and giving love to people in need, it’s one of the highlights of my week.
The School of Missions and Evangelism (SOME), of which I am a student until February, has been pleasantly surprising for me. So far, the topics and the speakers that have been brought in have been excellent, and I have been taking good notes on their teaching. We have about two months of the lecture phase left before the team heads off to Indonesia and Papau New Guinea. As a husband and father of 5, I have been given some leniency during the outreach phase of the school. If I go to Indonesia, it will be for the first two weeks of outreach, after which I will return to be with the family and do projects locally. Then in February there are some pretty exciting things being scheduled in some amazing places, which I will reveal later on, providing that it all works out.
For now, Beth and I and the kids have been keeping a positive attitude in this adjustment period to island living, and getting used to the new base. We’ve overcome some challenges, like helping our two youngest boys adjust to public school as they have been very comfortable in the past homeschooling. There are other challenges we are in the middle of working on like encouraging our older children to take new steps of faith to get involved at the local church and join clubs to make new friends.  Please pray for the gift of good companions for each of our children.  Even one good friend for each would make a world of difference!  Beyond that, I’m sure life will throw us some more curve balls that we will have to deal with. Not a problem when you keep a right perspective on things like life and purpose. God has always been faithful to us in the past, and we are confident He will continue to be.
Thank you for your wonderful prayers and support.
Here I will include a few pictures of the food distribution ministry and also one of me and some guys that came to Christ when we went out sharing the gospel in Waikiki. One of the biggest reasons we came here is because of the incredible evangelistic opportunity that Waikiki has to offer, with the diversity of new people who constantly fill the strip and the beaches. Its been fruitful so far, and I’m sure it will continue to be so.

The Stumblingblock of Pride

A short time ago, one of my kids was in trouble with their mom. This child was also really excited about going to McDonald’s that day, but I told them that before they could enjoy good gifts from me, they needed to go and apologize to their mother. The reply I got was, “I’d rather starve !” So my kid counted the cost, and decided it wasn’t worth humbling themself.
Adults aren’t all that different. We just don’t want to humble ourselves and admit that we were wrong, even if it means missing out on some really great things. Even when they’re coming from God.

Isaiah 30:15 “This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.”

The problem is not that God doesn’t offer salvation, rest, or strength. The problem is that we refuse to receive those things on His terms.
Why do we feel tired? Why do we feel condemned, carrying around shame and guilt? Because we would rather blameshift or deny personal responsibility than come to God in repentance and humility. We would rather work hard at doing good things to impress God and others than rest in the completed work of the life and death of Jesus Christ. So we trade rest and salvation in exchange for holding onto our pride.
Why do we feel weak and inadequate? Because we rely too much on our own strength, our own strategies and ingenuity rather than trusting in God and allowing our weakness to become our strength. See, if I try to do something I’m weak at alone, I will find that I don’t do all that great. But if I rely on God, and He empowers me to do things I otherwise could not have done, then my weakness becomes my strength.
Quietness is also important. We don’t have to be loud and proud and sound a trumpet before ourselves. Usually the people who do that are the most insecure of all! When we have a proper view of ourselves, it allows us to be quiet and humble, and as we trust in God, He becomes our strength and shows himself strong on our behalf.

God does offer salvation and strength, but we must come through the doors of repentance, rest, quietness and trust. Sadly, for so many people, what God said to Israel still holds true today, “but you would have none of it.” They just don’t want the gift God has for them. How tragic!
But the offer still stands, right up until the last moment possible. If you turn to the back of your Bible, you’ll see that Jesus still gives this call, right up until the end, “And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”
Revelation 22:17 NKJV

Confession

We have an iPad that we allow the kids to watch movies on. One day I picked it up and the corner of the protective case was broken off. When I asked the kids how it happened, nobody knew. Not one of them would own up to breaking it.
A few days later I picked it up again and this time the glass was broken on the same corner. Family meeting time. I showed them the damage and asked who broke it. Again, nobody knew.
About a week later, I found that the iPad had another chunk of the protective case broken off. As I brought it around from kid to kid, guess what? Nobody knew. A pattern was developing here.
A few weeks later, I came home to find that the entire screen was completely shattered, but when I asked around, big surprise, nobody had a clue how it happened.
I have to admit that I was angry, but I was much more upset that my kids weren’t being honest than I was about a piece of glass.

Human nature hasn’t changed much since the garden of Eden. When Adam and Eve sinned, first they tried to hide from God. When the sin was exposed, then one after the other they blame shifted and deflected responsibility to someone else.
If you are proud and refuse to acknowledge your guilt, then you will not receive the forgiveness of God. Some people refuse because they blame shift. They either try to lay the entire blame somewhere else, or they justify their own shortcomings because they were brought on by some circumstance. Ever done that? That’s not humility.
This is a sure way to keep yourself out of the grace of God. “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6
What God is looks for is confession. He is ready to forgive those who confess. What is confession? To put it simply, it’s a humble admission of guilt. No more blame shifting. No more excuses. Just a confession. Kind of like a genuine apology to God.
Look at these three verses and see the contrast between those who are willing to confess and those who refuse to, from 1 John 1:8-10.
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
Which do you want to be?

Life Saving Work

This man’s name is Ruben Robles. He’s a U.S. army veteran who was deported back to Tijuana, and he’s struggling to eek out a living.
Ruben began coming to the men’s discipleship study that we started during our time there. I would never have guessed that he was so depressed, but I found out recently that Ruben was planning to commit suicide. But after coming to the study, he changed his mind. God used something we said or did during our time together to convince him that he could go on living.
You never know what is going on under the exterior when you talk to people. We are all good at putting up fronts to project an image. Ruben was suffering, and we didn’t even know it. But God gave him something to live for through that men’s study.11954743_1651051258475107_7651833337185087216_n

Stories like these are always stark reminders of the magnitude of what we are doing when we answer the call to love people and influence them with the Word of God.
But we all have the opportunity to reach out and rescue the dying every single day. You and I know people who don’t yet know the Lord, and we have a solemn obligation to share the life of Christ with them. When you are faithful to step out and extend the love of God to to your friends and neighbors, and tell them about the salvation found in Jesus Christ, you are taking part in the most powerful and most important undertaking in the world. Out of all the noble causes that men can involve themselves, there is none greater or more honorable than to lead people to Jesus Christ.
“Let him know, that he who converts the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” James 5:20

Fudging the Lines

My little 2 year old nephew is pretty clever. While he was camping with his family, he kept getting into trouble for coming too close to the fire. After repeated warnings, my brother finally got down on the ground with him and drew a line in the dirt. He said it was fine if he threw sticks in the fire, but he could not cross that line.
He played near the line for a bit, but after a while he got bored. My brother could tell he was about to do something, so he pretended he wasn’t looking, and this is what happened next. This two year old kid slowly got down on his hands and knees, peeked over his shoulder to see if his dad was looking, then reached out his little hands and smoothed out the line, and drew a new line a little closer to the fire, all the while looking back to make sure he wasn’t being watched.
What a sneaker!

I guess little kids are just as prone to human nature as adults. No one is immune to the temptation to fudge the lines when it comes to doing what we are told. There is a saying that we are all familiar with, “Rules were made to be broken!”
That gets applied at school, in the workplace, the way we drive, etc. And sadly, many of us apply it in how we live out our lives before God.

I think the reason most of us cross or think we can move the lines of obedience and morality is because we don’t live as though we are in the sight of God. It’s like we don’t really believe that He has He eye on us. Otherwise we would never do some of the things we do.
See, if I want to look at pornography, I’m probably not going to do it while my wife is sitting right next to me. If I want to drive really fast, I’m probably not going to do it in the sight of a police officer. If I want to steal from my boss, I won’t be doing it while he’s in the room.
Why do we think we are going to get away with sin when God sees every second of every minute of our lives?
“The eye of the Lord is in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” Proverbs 15:3
God is ever present, always there. It’s not like he’s some overbearing supervisor that stands over your shoulder with one eyebrow raised, looking down on you with a frown and a checklist. He actually happens to be looking after you with love. But he does have rules in place, some of which to protect you, and some of which to protect others from you! Obedience is not an optional component of a relationship with God.

My brother didn’t draw a line in the dirt because he was an egomaniac who likes to force little kids into submission. It wasn’t because he didn’t want him to have fun.
He wanted his son to be safe.
Yet how many times have we moved or crossed the lines because we think God is too restrictive? The trouble is, every time we move the line closer to the fire, we are the ones in danger of getting burned.

In what ways have you personally been moving the line of obedience in your own life? Do you find yourself ignoring or playing word games with convicting passages of scripture?
According to Jesus, one of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin. (Jn 16:8) Ask Him if there are any areas where you have been fudging with the lines. He will be sure to bring them to mind.
Then confess, repent, and begin living your life being conscious of the fact that you are living “in the sight of God.”

Use what Works

A couple of years ago they held one of those family fishing derbys at a local pond. I was too late to register, so I had to wait until 4:00 to take my kids to catch fish.
So we showed up at 4:00 with five happy kids, but it was so packed with families trying to catch fish, we literally had to walk 3/4 of the way around the pond to find an open spot on the shore. We walked past tired and sunburned people who had been sitting out in the heat all day long, most of whom had one or two small fish on a stringer. It wasn’t the best day at the pond for most of them.
Finally I found about 10 feet of open shoreline to squeeze into and get my kids fishing. All I had was one pole with a special lure tied to the end of the line. This lure is like trout kryptonite. It hammers the fish every place I try it.
I stood on the shore and called one of my kids over. Then I casted out, waited five seconds for it to sink, and started reeling. Bam! Fish on! I handed him the pole and he happily reeled it in. The people I had bullied my way in between weren’t impressed. If you want to tick people off, walk up where they are fishing and go ahead and catch one right out from under their nose.
I called the next kid, casted out, waited five seconds, and Bam! Fish on! He gleefully fought the fish to shore. The other kids who had been fishing all day began to crowd around us, while their irritated parents looked on.
I called the third kid over, but this time it took two casts to tie into a fish. As I handed the pole to my daughter, I overheard a disgusted woman remark in disbelief to her husband, “He’s got another one!”
Those people who had born the heat of the day weren’t happy that some jerk walked up and pulled three fish out of the same spot they had fished all afternoon. But I wasn’t done yet. I still had two more kids to get fish for. We weren’t there all of five minutes, yet we walked away with five fresh trout.
Lots of people try their hand at fishing, but if you want to actually catch fish, you need to use the right bait. If you want to enjoy success, you need to use what works.

Last month I talked to a young man who had been seeing a psychiatrist and going to secular counseling for drug use. He had been going for about 8 months, but he still had a lot of shame, guilt, and temptation to go back. The reasons he turned to drugs in the first place were still lurking inside him. His counsellors were trying to help him discover the answers to his problems within himself.
I reasoned with him that I didn’t know him, he didn’t know me, and that after I walked away we would probably never see each other again, and with that I challenged him that he could be as real and raw with me as he wanted.
After spending about a half hour with him, having some straight talk about what the Bible has to say, he abandoned all confidence in himself or in his own ability to change or make up for his wrongs. The he prayed, confessing his sins to God, trusting that the blood of Jesus would cover his sins, and surrendered his life to Christ. He knew his sin, shame, and guilt were gone, and was now ready to walk in a newness of life, with the Holy Spirit to empower him.
You could see that his countenance had completely changed. He experienced more relief, more change, and received more hope in a half hour encounter with Jesus than in 8 months of secular, godless counseling.
I’m not saying that psychology and counseling are completely useless. There is a certain amount of benefit in them. However, if we want to see real transformation in people’s lives, we need to use what actually works.
The cross, the blood of Jesus Christ, and being born of the Spirit is where the real power lies. That’s where we find forgiveness and peace with God.

Maybe you’ve been working and toiling hard at trying to make up for your past and clean up your life. Maybe you’ve been trying all sorts of methods to get rid of guilt, shame, depression, or fear. There are answers, and there is hope. Come to Jesus.
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
